Among the most specialized areas of Modena's economy, the biomedical industry represents a sector of excellence with what are unique features in the Italian industrial district scenario. Concentrated on 8 municipalities of the Mirandola area, the companies engaged in the biomedical business stand out in terms of strong innovation compared to other "made in Italy" sectors. The products made by this complex industry mainly consist of heart-surgery appliances and accessories, devices for haemodialysis and the treatment of other medical ailments, as well as "disposable" devices in plastic, mainly for dialysis but also other medical uses. This biomedical district counts over 100 companies, employing 4,900 people. The business turnover is around 1 billion euro, while the export share is just under 70% of the total.
