Among the specialised sectors of the Modena area economy, the biomedical sector is highly advanced and unique on a national level. It comprises several companies, which were mainly established and developed in the area around Mirandola and whose products are highly innovative compared to the traditional ‘made in Italy’ sector. An industrial complex, similar to that of Mirandola where several biomedical firms are established in a single area, only exists in the United States. The roots of the Mirandola complex lie in the establishment of a group of local firms, which introduced sterilised disposable products for hospitals into the Italian market and developed the sector of hemodialysis. The first artificial kidney was produced in Mirandola. Other small scale firms take part in the production process. These were mainly established by former workers of the large companies and are specialised in the production of those products where the decentralisation of production proved convenient, that is in niche products of the sector.
